Meet the Muppets

aelora:

Chris has just taken a break from writing when his phone rings.  He glances down at caller ID to see it’s Darren.  Knowing his friend will probably completely distract him from any further progress on his book tonight, he decides to answer it anyway.

“Hey, buddy.  What’s going on?”

“They’re real.”

Chris pulls a face of confusion.  ”What?”

“The Muppets.  They’re real.”

Laughing, Chris says, “Okay, yes.  I know you were excited about singing with Kermit, and the performance was great.  I think you have a really good shot at being cast in their next mov—”

“No, Chris.” Darren sounds frustrated.  ”You don’t get it.  They’re real.  They’re standing right here, looking at me.  With those… earnest Muppet faces.”

Chris goes silent for a long moment.  Either Darren has been working too hard lately—which hey, who hasn’t?—or… “Did Joey finally convince you to try some Ecstasy with him?”

Now Darren actually makes a growl of frustration.  ”No.  Dude.  Joey’s off at a party.  It’s just me—and Muppets.”

“Dare, you should never get high alone.”

“I’m not high, dammit!  I wish I were right now, then it might all make sense.  Wait.  Hang on.” There’s a moment of muffled sound, and Chris can just barely hear Darren say, “Say something.”

And then a rather poor imitation of Kermit the Frog’s voice says, “Something,” into the phone.

Chris is laughing.  ”If you wanted to pull this off, maybe you should have invited Chord over to help?”

“What? No!  Wait, here.  You say something.”

Chris waits patiently, and then, “Wocka wocka!”  He shakes his head, smiling again and tells Darren, “You’re getting better.  You almost sounded like Fozzie.  I suggest you drink some water and just sit down for a while.  Get some rest.”

“Oh my god, Chris! I am not making this up!  They want me to go on a roadtrip with them.  A fricken Muppet road trip.”

Chris can honestly say he’s never been this amused in his life.  Or this worried for a friend.  ”Dare—”

“Look.  Stay there.  I’m bringing them to you.  And then you’re going to owe me a huge apology.  We’ll be right there, okay?”

“Okay, sure, Dare.  Be sure to drive the Studebaker,” Chris tells him in amusement.

“Oh, shut up.”

Ending the call, Chris shakes his head and laughs again as he sets his phone down and returns his attention to his laptop.  One thing is for certain, having Darren Criss as a friend means never a dull moment.

TBC?
